CMS to join forces with Swedish law firm Wistrand

With expansion into Sweden, CMS strengthens its presence in the Nordics

14 November 2023 – Global law firm CMS today announced that the top-ten Swedish firm Wistrand will become a CMS member. With onboarding expected to be complete by the first quarter of 2024, Wistrand will henceforth be known as CMS Wistrand.

“CMS’s aim is to develop a strong Nordic platform, especially since many CMS clients are already active in this high-growth region,” says Pierre-Sébastien Thill, CMS Chairman. “In 2021, the Norwegian firm Kluge joined CMS and now joining forces with Wistrand will ensure a presence in the Swedish market as well.”

Wistrand, a full-service law firm, has 51 equity  partners and around 210 employees, with offices in Sweden’s capital Stockholm and its second-largest city Gothenburg. The firm has a well-established presence in the Swedish business and legal communities.

“Joining CMS, with its unique collaborative structure, is the optimal choice for us. It ensures that we can continue to be a strong locally-rooted firm for all our Swedish clients and keep our full-service approach, while at the same time benefiting from CMS’s global expertise,” says Maria Kosteska Fägerquist, Chairman of the Board at Wistrand in Gothenburg.

CMS and Wistrand not only share corporate values but also focus expertise areas and both highlight the importance of supporting clients as they navigate the ESG agenda. This paves the way for synergies and provides significant opportunities for cross-border advisory and transaction work.

“Business is becoming more global and our clients expect that we provide them with high-quality, innovative solutions and expert work, wherever they operate,” says Duncan Weston, CMS Executive Partner. “Our clients looking to do business in Sweden will now have access to proven legal knowledge in the Swedish market. Wistrand joining CMS is another example of our strategy to combine deep local understanding with a global overview.”

“By joining CMS, one of the leading global law firms, Wistrand is future proofing its business and expanding from 150 lawyers in Stockholm and Gothenburg to more than 5,800 lawyers in 45 countries worldwide”, says Fredrik Råsberg, Chairman of the Board at Wistrand in Stockholm.
