10 October 2023

International law firm CMS has further strengthened its shipping and insurance offering with the appointment of Richard Oakley in its Hong Kong office. Richard, who is a solicitor and master mariner, joins CMS from Ince & Co where he was a Partner.

Richard has a wealth of experience advising on the full range of maritime matters, including casualty investigations, collisions, pollution, grounding, and total loss. Before becoming a lawyer, Richard served in the Merchant Navy for nine years.  Richard also has experience working for an International Group P&I Club.

CMS Partner and Co-Head of Insurance and Re-insurance Cheryl Gibson commented: “I am delighted to welcome Richard to our practice. His rich background and expertise have allowed him to develop a very high profile in Hong Kong, and he will bring a set of complementary skills to our established and already substantial marine team.”

CMS Hong Kong Partner Andrew Horton commented: “This latest appointment of Richard shows our commitment to the region, as we continue to attract leading individuals to our top-tier team. I look forward to working with him.”

Richard added: “CMS has a stellar reputation in Hong Kong for shipping disputes and I look forward to calling on the CMS international offering and sector expertise to enhance the service provided to my clients.”

Richard’s appointment is the latest in a series of recent hires for the CMS Hong Kong office and follows on the appointments of Adrian Elms and Anthony Woo to its Dispute Resolution and Insurance practices.

The CMS Hong Kong office advises local and international clients on dispute resolution, financial transactions, corporate/M&A and commercial/IP matters across the region.
