Daniel is a Legal Director in our Technology and Media team, with particular expertise in the content, broadcast and sport sectors. He has significant experience advising broadcasters and content platforms on content rights acquisition (including premium sports rights), distribution and carriage arrangements, regulatory matters, production, original commissions, and technical broadcast services – he also works with the Corporate Media team to provide strategic commercial advice on M&A in the media sector. 

After qualifying with CMS legacy firm Olswang LLP in 2012, Daniel spent a decade practising in-house for major media companies including AEG, Paramount and NBCUniversal. Most recently Daniel was Principal Lawyer in the Media Legal team at BT, managing a team that oversaw all aspects of the BT Sport and BT TV businesses as well as BT’s sponsorship portfolio.

In addition to his commercial media practice, Daniel also has an academic interest in public international law. He holds an LLM in International Law from UCL, and has written several articles in this area that have been published in academic journals.

Relevant experience

  • BT on the strategic project exploring alternative ownership structures for BT Sport, culminating in 2022 with the 50:50 joint venture with Warner Bros. Discovery that combined the assets of BT Sport and Eurosport UK. Advised on all aspects of the transaction including joint venture governance, due diligence, regulatory clearances and ongoing distribution arrangements. 
  • BT Sport on the acquisition of major sports rights, including two successive renewals of rights to UEFA club competitions covering the period from 2021-2027 (acquired by competitive tender process) and the renewal of Premiership Rugby rights for 2021-2024.
  • Various businesses on their content distribution and channel carriage arrangements, including: (i) Paramount on its channel carriage agreements with Sky for the MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central brands; (ii) BT TV on its exclusive channel carriage agreement with AMC and app distribution agreements with Netflix and BritBox; and (iii) BT Sport on its channel carriage agreement with Virgin Media.
  • Comedy Central on the commissioning of original scripted and non-scripted UK programming. 
  • BT Sport on its production of live sport programming, including contracting of on-screen talent, procurement of production services from third party suppliers, and regulatory compliance. 
  • NBCUniversal on a range of international productions across EMEA.
  • BT Sport on the production and commissioning of original content for its critically acclaimed BT Sport Films documentary brand, including life story rights agreements and third party financing arrangements.
